Oval pedestal
For my sculpture Between Heaven and Earth that I created in 2021 I developed a new pedestal with an oval shape.

First I made a router template of the oval shape with which I cut five oval stiffeners from 18 mm plywood. Then I drilled two holes all the way through and made a cutout on one side for mounting three vertical bars.

With two round bars and one rectangular bar assembled the frame is showing already the complete shape of the pedestal.

Then I used a sheet of flexible MDF to close the pedestal by rolling it around the frame, which is rather challenging for an oval shape to not get folds by sharp bends around the sharp corners of the oval shape.

The flexible MDF was carefully nailed and glued to the frame together with strips of flexible plywood for thickened edges at the bottom and top.

The top plate is also oval and a little bit larger, made from waterproof MDF.

The pedestal was painted black and the countermass (a slender steel bar) for moving the sculpture easily and smoothly by hand was installed through a hole in the top plate.

Finally the bronze sculpture was installed on top, finishing the complete appearance of the sculpture.
