Oval pedestal
For my sculpture Between Heaven and Earth that I created in 2021 I developed a new pedestal with an oval shape.
First I made a router template of the oval shape with which I cut 5 oval stiffeners from 18mm plywood. Then I drilled two holes all the way through and made a cutout for mounting the 3 vertical bars.
With the 2 round bars and the rectangular bar assembled the complete shape of the pedestal has become visible.
Then I used flexible mdf to close the pedestal by rolling it around the frame, which is rather challenging for an oval shape to not get folds by sharp bends around the two 'points' of the oval shape.
The flexible mdf was carefully nailed and glued to the frame together with strips for thickened edges at the bottom and top.
The top plate is also oval and a little bit larger, made from waterproof MDF.
Finally the pedestal was painted black and finalized with the bronze sculpture on top.
